Breaking Into Motorsport

We love hearing about your passion for motorsport and your drive to reach the top ranks of Formula One (F1). It’s a lifelong dream for many aspiring drivers. F1 is not just about the thrill of the race; it’s about the journey, the hard work, and the determination it takes to get there. However, the journey to F1 is often steep, with funding being one of the biggest hurdles on the road to the top.

Many F1 drivers enter the field with sponsors backing them. Securing a sponsor is not an easy task, but it’s not impossible either. To start looking for sponsors, you’ll have to build a CV and put together a profile of what you have to offer. It’s essential to show potential sponsors what their return on investment would be.

But remember, motorsport is not just about F1. There are many other aspects of motorsport like Rally, other single-seater series, and many more that you can start tapping into. We have a wealth of talent in South Africa, and from a grassroots level, like 2 Stroke karting, there are many facets of racing to explore. However, much like F1, these markets are often self-funded unless you can secure a sponsor.

Dreams are there for a reason, so don’t ever give up. Everything you are doing to reach your dream is never for nothing; it’s part of your path that you have to traverse to get what’s meant for you. When you have some time, do some research on many of the F1 drivers and what they had to do from a young age to reach their goals. They all had struggles, but their stories should inspire you to keep pushing forward.

If you’re passionate about motorsport, but racing isn’t your only interest, there are alternative ways to get into the market. Many teams look for students to train up and work in the industry. This could be a great way to start meeting the right people and building your network. Remember, passion and persistence are key in this industry. So keep pushing, keep learning, and who knows, you might just end up on the F1 track one day!
